Here I am sharing some interesting facts about an Indian state which only gets media coverage when there are floods, cyclones, Naxal attacks or elections. The state we are talking about is Orissa.
Here are seventeen least known facts which the local people take pride in, showing their rich culture, heritage, and natural beauty-
Number 17. Orissa was the first state in India to be formed on the basis of a language. On 20th February 2014, Odia language was the sixth one to be declared as a classical language. The other languages in the league are Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The status was given based on the long history and not having borrowed extensively from any other language.
Number 16. Long before Taj Mahal, the Konark Sun temple was built in such audacious architecture, inside the sea, that it still prevails to be an example of breathtaking creativity and the craftsmanship of Odias.
Number 15. Odissi dance, the cultural dance of the state is the oldest surviving dance form of India.
Number 14. There is a festival, named as the DhanuYatra, which hosts the world’s largest open-air theatre in the month of January. This is definitely a good way to celebrate your next new year.
Number 13. The famous sweet Rasagola originated from Orissa.
Number 12. It has a mysterious beach in Chandipur which is also called as the hide and seek beach that appears and disappears with every high tide and low tide to almost 5kms.
Number 11. A 23-feet giant Estuarine crocodile in Orissa has been crowned the world’s largest.
Number 10. Orissa is popular for having 3 mass nesting beaches of rare Olive Ridley Sea turtles including the world’s largest nesting ground of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle.
Number 9. The largest lion safari of India and the only white tiger safari in the world are located in the Nandankanan zoological park of Bhubaneswar.
Number 8. Land revenue the system was first started in the district of Ganjam before even getting implemented in India.
Number 7. Orissa is the highest producer of Hermite ore, contributing towards 25% of Hermite ore of India.
Number 6. The Sambalpuri saree is made from fabric woven on a handloom and is one of the most popular throughout India. This got its popularity when late Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi started wearing it.
Number 5. Wheeler island located in the south of Chandipur is a place where most of the missiles of India are tested. Akash missile, Agni missile, Prithvi missile are some of them to be named.
Number 4. The leaning temple of Huma situated in Sambalpur is the only leaning temple in the world.
Number 3. The Sinhalas of Sri Lanka is named after Raja Jai Sinha, who used to be a king of ancient Orissa.
Number 2. The Hirakud dam located in Sambalpur is the fourth largest in the world. The reservoir has a capacity of 5896 million square meters.
Number 1. The state capital is a witness to over 600 temples from the medieval period. It is therefore called the Temple city.
